Culpeper Minutemen option: history and meaning
This section applies specifically to the Culpeper Minutemen Flag option, not to every design in this listing.
The Culpeper Minutemen formed in Virginia in 1775, drawing men from Culpeper, Orange, and Fauquier counties. The unit participated in the early Revolutionary fighting at Hampton and Great Bridge.
The familiar banner associated with the unit combines its name, a coiled rattlesnake, and the mottos “Liberty or Death” and “Don't Tread on Me” on a white field. The liberty-or-death wording connects to Patrick Henry's call for resistance, while the snake belongs to a wider tradition of Revolutionary American symbolism. The Culpeper design is distinct from the yellow-field Gadsden flag.
This patch is a modern interpretation of that flag tradition, not an original 1775 artifact. A wearer may choose it for an interest in Virginia history, the Revolutionary militia, or the themes of liberty and resistance. Its meaning varies with the wearer and setting.
