The history behind Come and Take It
The Gonzales flag is associated with the confrontation of October 2, 1835, an opening battle of the Texas Revolution. Mexican authorities had provided the settlement with a cannon for local defense in 1831. When they later demanded its return, residents refused to surrender it and gathered volunteers.
The familiar flag design pairs a cannon and a single star with the words โCome and Take It.โ In its original setting, the challenge referred to the disputed cannon, rather than a general statement about every weapon. The encounter at Gonzales marked a move from political conflict to armed resistance.
Historical symbol, modern meanings
Accounts credit women in Gonzales, including Sarah DeWitt and her daughter Evaline, with making the banner. The original flag has not survived; this product is a modern interpretation of the historical design, not an original artifact.
Today, the design may express Texas heritage, defiance, or support for gun rights. Those modern uses are distinct from its 1835 context, and a wearer's meaning depends on the person and setting.
