The 1777 flag resolution

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress resolved that the United States flag should have thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white stars in a blue field, representing a new constellation. The resolution did not prescribe a circular star arrangement, the number of points on each star, or exact flag proportions.

The circular thirteen-star design commonly called the Betsy Ross flag is therefore one interpretation of an early American flag, not a layout specifically mandated by that resolution.

Betsy Ross: tradition and evidence

Betsy Ross was a Philadelphia upholsterer and flag maker. The familiar story that she made the first Stars and Stripes became public through her grandson William Canby's presentation in 1870, long after the Revolution. It rests on family recollections rather than contemporary records establishing the often-described meeting with George Washington or her creation of the first American flag.

Francis Hopkinson's later request for payment for flag-design work provides a separate documentary connection to early American flag design. It does not establish that he designed the particular circular-star pattern associated with Ross today.

Historical inspiration, modern meaning

This patch is a modern interpretation, not a reproduction of a verified flag made by Ross. A wearer may choose it for an interest in founding-era history, the thirteen original states, or American heritage. Its meaning depends on the wearer and context.
