What is the Nazarene (ن) Patch? The Anti-ISIS Symbol Explained
A single Arabic letter became one of the most powerful symbols of the 2010s.
The Origin
In 2014, ISIS began marking the homes of Christians in Mosul, Iraq with the Arabic letter ن (Nun) — short for Nasrani, meaning "Nazarene" or Christian. It was a mark of persecution — a warning that Christians must convert, pay a tax, or face death.
The World Responds
Within days, Christians and supporters around the world began using the ن symbol as a sign of solidarity — wearing it, posting it, and displaying it to say: we stand with the persecuted.
The symbol spread rapidly across social media and into the tactical community, where many veterans and operators had served in Iraq and had personal connections to the region and its people.
What It Means Today
Wearing the Nazarene patch is a statement of:
- Solidarity with persecuted Christians worldwide
- Opposition to ISIS and radical extremism
- Faith and resilience in the face of persecution
