The Ranger Tab — a small, curved black-and-gold tab worn on the left shoulder — is one of the most respected pieces of insignia in the U.S. Army. It represents completion of one of the most physically and mentally demanding courses in the American military. Here's what it takes to earn it.
What Is Ranger School?
Ranger School is a 61-day combat leadership course conducted by the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning), Georgia, with additional phases at Camp Merrill in Dahlonega, Georgia, and Camp Rudder at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.
The course is designed to develop combat leadership skills under conditions of extreme physical and mental stress — sleep deprivation, caloric restriction, physical exhaustion, and continuous tactical operations. Students average 3.5 hours of sleep per night and consume far fewer calories than they burn, operating in a state of constant physical degradation while being evaluated on their ability to lead small unit tactical operations.
The Three Phases
Ranger School consists of three phases: the Benning Phase (mountains and swamps of Georgia), the Mountain Phase (Dahlonega, Georgia — rappelling, mountain operations, and patrols in rugged terrain), and the Florida Phase (swamp operations, small boat movements, and jungle patrolling at Eglin AFB).
Students who fail to meet the standard at any phase can be "recycled" — sent back to repeat that phase — or dropped from the course entirely. The overall graduation rate hovers around 40-50%, meaning more than half of all students who start Ranger School do not finish.
The Tab: What It Means
The Ranger Tab is not a unit assignment — it's a qualification. Any soldier from any branch or MOS can attend Ranger School, and those who graduate wear the tab for the rest of their career. It's a permanent mark of demonstrated leadership under extreme conditions.
In the Army, the Ranger Tab is a signal: this person has been tested beyond what most people can endure, and they performed. It commands immediate respect across all ranks and branches.
