How to Attach Morale Patches to a Plate Carrier
Morale patches are one of the #1 way to personalize a tactical backpack or plate carrier — but if you're new to tactical gear, you might be wondering exactly how they attach and where to put them.
This guide covers everything you need to know. For a broader overview, check out our Ultimate Guide to Morale Patches.
How Morale Patches Attach
Almost all morale patches use hook-and-loop fastener — commonly known by the brand name Velcro. The patch has the "hook" side (the rough, scratchy side) and your gear has the "loop" side (the soft, fuzzy side).
All BuckUp Tactical patches come with hook-and-loop backing pre-applied — no sewing required. Not sure which patch type is right for you? See our PVC vs Embroidered guide.
What You Need
- A morale patch with hook-and-loop backing
- A plate carrier, vest, backpack, or hat with a loop panel
Most modern plate carriers have loop panels built in — check the front, back, and shoulder areas of your carrier.
Step-by-Step: Attaching a Patch to a Plate Carrier
- Find the loop panel on your plate carrier — it's the soft, fabric panel (usually on the front or back)
- Peel the backing off your patch if it has a protective cover (most don't — just press directly)
- Position the patch where you want it
- Press firmly for 5-10 seconds to seat the hook-and-loop connection
- Test it by tugging lightly — it should hold firmly
That's it. No tools, no sewing, no permanent attachment.
Where to Put Patches on a Plate Carrier
- Front panel — most visible spot, great for blood type patches or unit patches
- Back panel — flag patches and IR patches are commonly worn here
- Shoulder straps — smaller patches work well here
- Cummerbund — side panels often have loop material too
Other Gear You Can Put Patches On
- Backpacks — most tactical backpacks have loop panels on the front pocket. See our tactical backpack accessories guide.
- Hats — many tactical caps have a loop panel on the front
- Range bags — great for funny patches and unit patches
- Jackets & vests — if they have loop panels or you add loop tape
Can You Add Loop Material to Gear That Doesn't Have It?
Yes — you can buy adhesive or sew-on loop tape and add it to almost any surface. This lets you put patches on gear that didn't originally come with a loop panel.
