Goliad Morale Patch: Remember Goliad and the Texas Revolution

"Remember the Alamo" is one of the most famous battle cries in American history. But there's another cry that came first — "Remember Goliad" — and the story behind it is just as powerful, and just as important to understanding the Texas Revolution and the spirit of defiance it represents.

What Happened at Goliad?

On March 27, 1836, Colonel James Fannin and approximately 342 Texian soldiers were executed by order of Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna at the Presidio La Bahía near Goliad, Texas. The men had surrendered after the Battle of Coleto Creek, expecting to be treated as prisoners of war. Instead, Santa Anna ordered them shot.

The massacre at Goliad — coming just weeks after the fall of the Alamo on March 6, 1836 — shocked the Texian forces and the American public. It was a clear violation of the rules of war and galvanized resistance against Santa Anna's forces.

"Remember Goliad" — The Battle Cry

When General Sam Houston led Texian forces against Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836, his troops charged with two battle cries: "Remember the Alamo!" and "Remember Goliad!" The battle lasted just 18 minutes. Santa Anna's army was routed, Texas won its independence, and the Republic of Texas was born.

"Remember Goliad" represents the same thing as "Remember the Alamo" — the refusal to let sacrifice be forgotten, and the determination to fight back against tyranny and injustice no matter the odds.

Why It Resonates in the Tactical Community

For veterans, first responders, and patriots, Goliad is a reminder that those who stand and fight deserve to be remembered — and that betrayal and injustice must be answered. It's a patch that carries real historical weight and speaks to the values of honor, sacrifice, and accountability.

It's also a piece of Texas history that most people outside the Lone Star State don't know — making it a great conversation starter and a way to educate others about the full story of Texas independence.
